Petunia Pickle Bottom Review & Giveaway - closed

I'll admit it, I have somewhat of a blanket obsession right now, so I jumped at the chance to review an organic cotton Petunia Pickle Bottom stroller blanket. We don't use our stroller ever, but I do put a blanket around Elijah when he's in the ERGO and it's cold out!

The thing that I love most about the Petunia Pickle Bottom blankets (well, besides that they are organic) is their sophisticated patterns. You won't find any ducks or bunnies here, which I appreciate because I really don't care for "cutesy" patterns.

I chose the Springtime in Surrey pattern blanket for review because browns and yellows are one of my favorite color combinations.

These blankets measures a generous 34 x 29 in. and are made with a soft organic cotton knit. The weight of this blanket is perfect for all seasons, not too thin and not too thick. It feels like a nice, heavy cotton jersey tee. It's solid colored on one side so you get two blankets in one!

Petunia Pickle Bottom also carries diaper bags that look like chic handbags or backpacks and slings in the Springtime in Surrey pattern (and their other cute patterns too)!

Buy It: Visit Petunia Pickle Bottom to purchase one of their beautiful organic stroller blankets

Win It: Petunia Pickle Bottom is offering one of Le Petit Owlet's readers an organic stroller blanket (a $48 value) in the print of their choice!

Give that baby the breast!

I want to start off by saying that yes, there are reasons why a mother cannot breastfeed. There are some people who have medical reasons for not being able to breastfeed, these people should not be made to feel bad for not breastfeeding, it's not their fault. If they wanted to breastfeed and they can't then they are probably already devastated. Another reason that is ok in my eyes for not breastfeeding is postpartum depression. Breastfeeding can be hard at first, and without the right support it can become so overwhelming. It's hard to understand if you have never had postpartum depression, but some women need to stop breastfeeding in order to start their recovery. These women also feel bad as it is, they don't need people making them feel worse. I think that formula should be a "last resort". There are other options out there. There are milk banks where you can get breastmilk from a donor. They pasteurize all breastmilk, so some of the antibodies and nutrients will be lacking, but it's still better for baby.
I do think that everyone should try to breastfeed. It's natural, it's beautiful, it's one of the best things that you can do for your baby, so why wouldn't you want to try?
I think that some women don't try or continue breastfeeding because of a lack of support. I had cracked and bleeding nipples for about a week. Every time Elijah would latch on it would hurt so bad, it even brought tears to my eyes a few times. I had to brace myself and do breathing exercises. I knew it wasn't his latch, he had a perfect latch from the minute he started nursing, but my nipples were being used in a way they had never been used before, and they were being used about 12+ times per day for anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes at a time. Then, as soon as my nipples healed, it didn't hurt anymore, but then I got mastitis. I still breastfed through it all, I was determined and I never once thought that I wanted to stop, because I didn't. No matter how much it hurt or what happened, I was going to breastfeed my baby. Now breastfeeding is one of my favorite things to do. It's such a wonderful bonding experience. Elijah stares at me lovingly while he's nursing, and sometimes he even stops for a second to laugh. It melts my heart. I'm going to nurse as long as Elijah wants it, even if he wants it until he's 3. Not all women will experience breastfeeding the way that I did, and I can understand why some women just want to give up, but instead of give up women should get help.

Breastfeeding Support
La Leche League  - Not only does their website have a forum and tons of resources, but they have meetings all over the place. You will find a ton of support at these meetings, and you will be able to ask any questions, get help with any problems you might be having, or just sit and talk with other mamas!

Dr. Jack Newman has a wonderful website. I used his website when I was researching surgery and breastfeeding, and also when I was determining whether I could continue breastfeeding if I was to do the interferon treatment for cancer (and you can breastfeed on interferon! I decided not to do the interferon treatment anyway)

Kellymom - I spent a good chunk of the first few weeks of Elijah's life on Kellymom. They have everything that you want or need to know about breastfeeding. Bookmark it!

Find an IBLCE certified lactation consultant. I had an entire list of lc's before I gave birth. It's a good thing to have on hand in case you need it.

Read, read, read! One of the best books I read was The Breastfeeding Book by Dr. Sears. Dr. Jack Newman also has a wide variety of books on breastfeeding that you can find here.

Be prepared. This is one thing I could have done better. I was prepared in the sense that I had gotten a Boppy at my baby shower, read books, and had a list of lactation consultants ready, but I did not have some necessary items! Lanolin (or any natural nipple cream). Seriously, you want this. I still use my tube of lanolin for everything from chapped lips and skin to lanolizing my wool diaper covers. I mentioned it before in my must haves for new moms post, but the Earth Mama Angel Baby Breastfeeding Support Kit will be your most prized possession in the first few weeks of your baby's life. You should also be prepared by understanding that breastfeeding is not always easy and that you might need help. If you are having trouble it doesn't mean you are a failure, not only is it new to you, but it's new to your baby, so you're both learning how to do something new at the same time! You can do it, and the hard weeks will end.

No artificial nipples for the first 6-8 weeks. Nipple confusion doesn't always happen, but it does happen, and having to overcome that obstacle is kind of like taking two steps back for every one step forward. If your baby loves to suck and you can't let him suck on your nipple anymore, try your finger. Elijah loved my finger! It was the best soothing device (besides myself)!

Life thoughts

My entire life I was essentially told that if I didn't go to college I wouldn't get anywhere in life. Well, I didn't go to college, and I honestly think I've gotten pretty far.
I never went to college because I wasn't ready. I didn't want to go somewhere and pay thousands of dollars that I'd eventually have to pay back for a piece of paper that tells me I am qualified to do something that I probably don't even want to do anyway. What I want to do in life does not require a degree, and that's be a mom and keep sewing and selling the tings that I create. One day I would like to open a store and sell the things that I create, and things other people create, maybe one day I will finally write that book I've always wanted to.
I guess the object of this post is to say that just because you didn't go to college doesn't mean you aren't going to go anywhere. As my son grows I am going to let him take the lead on his life. He can do what makes him happy, I'm not going to restrict him or tell him that he's screwing up his life. He can take ballet classes, or join a math team. Write poetry, paint, draw, play the violin, play volleyball, run track. The world is his. If he wants to be homeschooled through high school then I can do that, if he wants to go to a school then he can do that too. If he decides he wants to take a break after high school to explore the world then I will tell him to go for it. If he decides he wants to be an artist for the rest of his life and not go to college at all then that is his decision and I will support it.

A piece of paper that says congratulations you got through years of a very expensive education does not guarantee happiness. Money does not equal happiness. Happiness is doing something that you love and want to do, and being supported. I want to support Elijah in everything that he wants to do, and I am really excited to see what path he is going to take in life.

Healthy Juicer Review & Giveaway - closed

There's no doubt about it, fresh fruits and vegetables are good for you. I recently started looking into the Gerson Therapy which is an alternative cancer therapy. The Gerson Therapy uses organic foods, juicing, detoxification, and natural supplements to activate the body's ability to heal itself. Juicing is the main component of the therapy, you drink 13+ glasses of fresh juice per day! Between researching the Gerson Therapy and watching Crazy Sexy Cancer I decided that I was going to turn towards some alternative therapies to hopefully keep my cancer at bay. Not only will it help my body keep cancer away there is research that shows it will help prevent diabetes, heart disease, asthma, arthritis, and allergies.

So where do you begin? There are a ton of juicers out there. The main goal is to preserve as many enzymes and nutrients that you can. Because heat destroys some of these important enzymes centrifugal juicers are not recommended.

I was recently given the chance to try out the Healthy Juicer which is a manual juicer specifically made for wheatgrass and leafy greens. Because it's manual it produces virtually no heat, so you can be sure you are getting the optimum enzymes and nutrients.

I tested the Healthy Juicer with some organic spinach.

Ease of use: The Healthy Juicer was extremely easy to put together! The instructions were very thorough and I only had to glance over them once. Since this is a manual juicer it does take more effort than an electric juicer, but it juices leafy greens with minimal effort.
Cleaning the Healthy Juicer is also a breeze. Everything comes apart for easy cleaning. It only took about 5-10 minutes after juicing to clean the entire juicer.
This juicer is compact so storing is really easy which is great!

Value: This juicer cots $44.95 which is a great value compared to most other manual juicers. I've seen manual wheatgrass juicers for $100+. I'd much rather spend $44.95, wouldn't you?
They also have an electric Healthy Juicer for $149.95 which also juices wheatgrass and leafy greens, but also juices fruits, has pasta making attachments, and can make frozen desserts.
End result: This juicer definitely extracts most of the juice from the veggies you put into it! The crushed spinach (pictured right) was pretty dry, which means all of the juice was extracted (pictured left) and drank by my husband and I.

Buy It: Visit Healthy Juicer or http://www.877myjuicer.com to purchase!

Win It: Healthy Juicer and http://www.877myjuicer.com are generously sponsoring a giveaway of one of the same Healthy Juicers that I tried out to one of our readers!

There's still a real woman behind this blog!

Whew! I feel like I've hardly been blogging aside from my reviews and giveaways. I suddenly got super, super busy so any "free" time is spent doing, well, nothing. Not only is my almost 8 month old son extremely mobile now (crawling everywhere, standing up while holding on to things and semi cruising!), but I have taken on a lot of extra stuff. I am working on a website for a farmers market in New Braunfels, sewing custom orders, sewing to keep my shop stocked, and also writing reviews. It's a lot! I don't even think I've showered in two days.

I've been having quite the anxiety attack lately. A small, painful bump formed on the back of my neck just below my head. I'm pretty sure it is a lymph node. It's gone down in size and it's not as painful as it was the other day, so I am hoping it's just allergies or a cold or something, but I can't stop thinking it's cancer. For the rest of my life a bump, blemish, sore spot, headache, or any other ache or pain is going to automatically be cancer. Cancer head. It's unavoidable and it's making me anxiety ridden. I'm going to see a psychiatrist in March to get evaluated because the Zoloft that I am on for PPD doesn't seem to be working that well anymore. It works to some degree but I really think I need something different, and something that will hopefully help with my anxiety. I hate taking medication but right now I really have no choice, it's beyond my control.

I go to MD Anderson in Houston on March 1st for a follow up with blood work and a head, neck and chest ultrasound. Hopefully everything will turn out ok, but if it doesn't at least I can go to one of the best cancer hospitals. Excuse my language, but fuck cancer.

I've been looking into Buddhist meditation centers here in Austin. At this point I need to find some kind of spiritual path and I think meditation would be good for me. If I can learn to center myself and find peace then maybe all of this won't be so difficult to deal with. What do you do to calm yourself? Do you follow any kind of religion?

I've been desperately trying to get all of my diapers clean at the same time so I can take a photo of my stash. Maybe tonight will be the night (minus two)!

Leg Huggers Review & Giveaway - closed

I love baby leg warmers. They are great for keeping your babe warm during diaper changes and they are just super cute! I was extremely excited when I found Agoo Leg Huggers because not only are they cute baby leg warmers but they have UV protection. UV protection is extremely important to me because of my current battle with skin cancer. My melanoma diagnosis puts my son at a greater risk of getting it, so I want to take every precaution possible.

Agoo carries clothing for babies and kids as well as accessories and outerwear. All of their items are cohesive so you can mix and match, which is really great. I plan on getting some stuff for Eli soon!

I received 3 pairs of the Leg Huggers to test out. Ronnie the Rhino, Blue Stripes, and Gigi the Giraffe.

We love Leg Huggers! They are longer than some other brands of baby leg warmers, which means they will last longer, it's also easier to get them up over babies thighs. They are also the softest baby leg warmers I have ever felt! Even after washing them several times they are still retaining their softness and are not pilly.

It was really hard to get a good picture of Elijah sporting the Gigi the Giraffe Leg Huggers because he is an extremely mobile almost 8 month old, but you can tell he loves them!

Leg Huggers cost $10, which is a very fair price. Some brands are more expensive. I prefer Leg Huggers to other brands just because they are so much softer and longer!

Buy It: Visit Agoo and buy some Leg Huggers for your babe!

Win It: Agoo is generously sponsoring a giveaway for one of Le Petit Owlet's readers. The winner will win three (3) pairs of Leg Huggers in their choice of patterns! (a $30 value)

Seventh Generation Review & Giveaway - closed

It's been a hectic few days, so hectic that I've hardly had time to sit down and write! Luckily I've got a little time right now while Elijah sleeps (hopefully)!

We only use non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning products in our house. Indoor air pollution is a growing problem and most commercial cleaning products out there have harmful chemicals that you and your family are probably inhaling. This PDF file is a comprehensive list (4 full pages!) of common chemicals found in cleaning products and how thy are harmful. I recently saw commercials that were saying to clean baby toys in bleach! Seriously? Bleach is extremely toxic and full of chemicals. A great non-toxic alternative to bleach is vinegar.

Here are some scary facts to think about. 92% of all exposure to poisons occur in the home and involve everyday household items such as cleaning products, cosmetics, bath & body items, and medications. Exposure to the toxic chemicals in cleaning products has been linked to cancer, birth defects, heart disease, infertility, allergies, fatigue, and migraines. There are three ways for toxic chemicals to enter your body: breathing, swallowing, and skin absorption. Think about all the surfaces in your home that you clean. You touch those surfaces daily, probably thousands of times a day even!

So you can see why I don't use any cleaning products that have those nasty chemicals. I already have to deal with one cancer, I really don't want to deal with another kind, or any other disease for that matter.

Seventh Generation recently sent me their Healthy Home Starter Set to try out, an assortment of wonderful products! Each product is scented with essential oils, so you get a nice scent that is all natural. That makes cleaning fun!

When my package got here I was so excited. In fact, I scrubbed the entire bathroom and the kitchen floor at 2am. I can't remember the last time (if there was ever a time like that) I was that excited to clean!

The Healthy Home Kit consists of the following products:

Kitchen Cleaner - "Our Wild Orange & Cedar Spice cleaner tackles even greasy cooking surfaces and smelly garbage cans with ease."  The Wild Orange & Cedar Spice is by far my favorite scent of all of these products (though they all do smell great)! I love it so much that I scrubbed the entire kitchen floor, stove, and even the diaper pail with this product! It cleans really well and cuts through grease just like it says it does!

All-Purpose Cleaner - "Cleans and degreases hard surfaces, indoors and out. Non toxic, it creates no harsh fumes. Safe for your family and the planet, great for wet mopping; not recommended on wood floors." This is also great! I did try this out on the kitchen floor as well as the kitchen cleaner.

Glass & Surface Cleaner - "Effectively cleans glass, mirrors, chrome and other hard surfaces – without streaks, toxins, fumes or harsh chemicals."  Mirrors and glass are one of those things that I rarely clean, but now I can't clean them enough! The grapefruit scent is really lovely.

Shower Cleaner - "Green Mandarin & Leaf daily-use shower spray prevents soap-scum buildup, mold and mildew without harsh fumes or toxic agents."

Toilet Bowl Cleaner - "Compare our Emerald Cypress & Fir Toilet Bowl Cleaner to your cleaner. You'll love the change! Cleans and deodorizes without harsh fumes, harmful chemicals, aerosols or dyes."

Tub & Tile Cleaner - "You'll love our Emerald Cypress & Fir Tub & Tile Cleaner. No harsh fumes. Refreshing spa scent makes bathroom cleaning a pleasure!"  They are right when they say that bathroom cleaning will be a pleasure. The bathroom is probably my least favorite room of the house to clean. These 3 bathroom products are awesome, I think I've cleaned the tub about 6 times in the past 2 weeks, that's a record!

Brown Paper Towels - "These unbleached, 100%-recycled towels clean up spills fast! No dyes or fragrances; 120 two-ply sheets per roll.I'm trying to move away from disposable paper towels, but since we still use them occasionally then I feel better about it by using recycled paper towels without any dyes.

Seventh Generation discloses all of their ingredients, so you can be sure you know exactly what you are using. Instead of bleach they use hydrogen peroxide which is a great alternative.

Buy It: Visit the Seventh Generation website to purchase products or find out where you can get them locally!
Win It: Seventh Generation is generously offering one of our readers the same Healthy Home kit that I got to try (pictured above, valued at $38.99).

Beautiful Blogger Award

I just noticed this! Thank you to The Crunchy Baby for the Beautiful Blogger Award! That made me smile :)

Upon receiving this award you are supposed to tell 7 things about yourself. So let's see...

1. One of my lifelong dreams was to work for myself. I used to want to be a fashion designer, but now I have taken my love for sewing and all things baby and I am making baby things instead!

2. I've been thinking a lot about opening up an online cloth diaper shop. Maybe in the future!

3. I used to eat all sorts of crap. McDonald's, you name it. Then one day I watched Meet Your Meat and I haven't touched meat since. I can definitely tell a difference in the way I feel. I used to get sick all the time, now I rarely get sick! I could eat a little healthier lately, but I will be soon!

4. I've been blogging since I was about 16. It started with Livejournal!

5. I used to design websites when I was 17! I was ambitious for a small part of my teenage years. I taught myself some CSS and html and I would sit in my room and make websites until the wee hours of the morning.

6. I was born in Salem hospital in Salem, MA. Where the witches were hung! I grew up in Beverly, MA

7. I desperately miss having 4 seasons. I think I have been suffering from some seasonal depression from lack of snow. I would like to move somewhere that has a winter, and a beautiful colorful fall in the not super distant future

1. Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog.
2. Copy the award and paste it to your blog.
3. Tell us 7 interesting facts about yourself.
4. Nominate fellow bloggers that you love and link up to their blog

I nominate: The Girl Is A Mom, Trees Will Bend, and Happyfunlove!

Pure-Rest™ Organic Wool Baby Blanket from Naturally Good Review & Giveaway + - closed

If you read my blog, you know I love wool. If this is the first time you are visiting Le Petit Owlet, well, I love wool! You can check out a whole post dedicated to wool here.

Since I love wool, I was ecstatic to be sent the Pure-Rest™ Organic Wool Baby Blanket from Naturally Good. This blanket is made from o-wool, which is 100% certified organic merino soft wool grown and produced without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or chemicals.
We receive the blanket in natural to try out. This baby blanket is a generous size of 34" x 52" - larger than your average baby blanket, which is nice because not only will your child be able to use it for years, but you can find lots of other uses for it when they get to big to use it as a blanket anymore!

This is the softest wool blanket you will ever feel in your life. Ever. This blanket has me coveting a queen or king sized one of these for myself. Luckily since it's so big I have been able to share it with Elijah while we're in bed. It's been really cold the past few days too, so it's been really nice. This blanket has kept us incredibly warm, but not too warm. The perfect temperature. One misconception that people have about wool is that it's only for the cold. Wool has built in temperature control, it will keep you warm in the winter, but it will also keep you cool in the summer. Of course I wouldn't go wearing a wool sweater around in the middle of July, but you can surely use a wool blanket year round.

So you think you're allergic to wool? Here's an excerpt taken from the Naturally Good website:

Did you know that most people are NOT allergic to wool? They are actually having a painful response to the course prickly fibers. Some people are more sensitive to this than others. Why are wool fibers so course? It's because of the carbonizing required to remove excess vegetable matter from the wool. It makes the wool fibers weak and then they split, becoming prickly. Also the shorter the fibers are, the better the chance of prickle because there are more fiber ends per unit of fabric. The wool used in our products does NOT go through the carbonizing process. Only wool that is free from prickly vegetable matter is used so that no carbonizing is required. The fibers used in our products are never short! This results in a much softer wool that does not cause prickle.
